SUR-NAME, FIRST NAME, MIDDLE NAME ETC
When I went asked to give me PAN No. (incometax) I was asked What is your surname? I asked what is sur-name? What do you mean by Surname? Which is middle name in my name and which is last? No Answer. I was asked to some how dissect my name to suit their application as otherwise my application would not be processed. My name is C.S.Puttu Rao. According to prevalent practice in our area our First initials, i.e in my case C stands for my native i.e, Chickballapur, and next 'S' stands for my fathers name, i.e. Suryanarayana Rao and what follows is my name Puttu Rao. If you want to dissect my name into first name middle name, and last name it does not make sense. If you apply for a Passport also the same questions are asked. It may be alright for a U.S. Citizen or a Person from Europe, but if you ask me I will say the question is absurd. It is just like asking an American, what is Gothra, Nakshathra, & Raasi and produce a horoscope. He will not be able to answer. In their anxiety to fly away from this Country, unashamedly our people have submitted themselves to Foreign concepts. Many times, our people are addressed by the name of their place, or fathers name. My friend's fathers name is Sampangiramaiah and his name Radhakrishna. But he is popularly addressed as Mr. Sam? Fathers name also shortened to make it simple. Another person is addressed as Mr. Bagalkot. Who authorised them to twist and turn the name given by our Parents to the fancy of Foreigners. The names of people who go abroad from here are changed according to the fancy of each person. Sometimes it may not have any semblance to original name. I feel it is an insult. Practices and concepts differ from place to place and each person has the right to feel his concept is the best. In our own state, if you go to North Canara names are pronounced differently. Why not allow people to have their own way instead trying to cage them under one particular concept? At best they can ask for explanations/expansion for the initials. When people find it difficult to pronounce the full name they can be called by their short name. It is time our PAN Applications and Passport Applications ETC., are suitably altered and and foreign governments are also made aware of our sentiments and made to respect our sentiments. CSP Rao.
